Excerpt

She began wrapping the cloth tightly about her, binding her breasts firmly, criss-crossing the gauzy fabric around her torso and across her stomach, tying it off at her hip. She shimmied into a pair of leather leggings and reached for her foot wraps. To other races—like the dwarves and humans—the elves lack of footwear was strange. The elven people had strong ties to the lands, their magic and mystique were inexplicably linked. Even those who did not practice magic felt the connection to nature, and the elven people had maintained the practice throughout their long history.

After binding her feet and leaving only her toes exposed, she tossed an olive green tunic over her head before quickly weaving her tresses into a thick braid.

Sivath was waiting, and Flintathriël was late. Again.

She was reaching for her leather jerkin when he finally appeared in her doorway.

Arms akimbo, he slouched against the frame, all lean muscle and sharp angles beneath his leathers. Silver-white hair fell across his forehead, hiding the dark arches of his brows as he gazed at her with silvery blue eyes. The mop of hair barely touching his shoulders. His coloring typical of the royal family.

Her gaze traced his tattoos. Sweeping vines encompassed runic symbols, curling downward from his bottom lip, winding and weaving their way down his chin and neck. She knew every line that twisted and spread across his shoulders, and across his back. Etchings that disappeared beneath his tunic and reappeared along his arms. She still remembered the day he received the markings, branding him Nuvian. The day she first gave herself to him, the day she truly became his.

Characters gone wild: How the comic relief became the hero

It’s funny how wildly out of control things can get. I mean, you start out with the intention of simply writing a short 2,000 word character study to help push through the writer’s block you have been struggling with. Short, concise, maybe spend a day or so on it. Just something fresh and new to get the creativity flowing again you know?

That’s not what happened.

What happened was I set aside my novel and spent six months on writing a 30,000 word novella featuring a character who originally only had a small bit part… until I fell in love with him and created a more in depth history.

In his simplest incarnation, Flintathriël, (now the full-fledged hero of The Last Dragon Rider), was basically created to offer snarky and sarcastic comments to the hero and flirt with his love interest. That was pretty much his entire purpose in the beginning. Someone light and fun, someone to stir the proverbial pot.

Until one day his entire past just came crashing through, demanding to be written. So I started jotting down some notes for a short story… It was never meant to be anything serious…

I had this amazing idea, set against the backdrop of an ancient war with love, betrayal, dragons and elves and all those good things. But I only wanted it to be short.

I was determined to finish my other novel in 2015…

I wrote a novella instead…

But Flintathriël was destined to be more than a flat caricature and all too soon he had taken over telling his own story. He wanted more from life so I obliged, turning him into a fully fleshed out character as he demanded, creating something magical in the process.

In getting distracted with my novella, it has enabled me to fill in a few gaps in my novel (which is now book 2). Several characters appear in both stories and writing this novella has allowed me to flesh out those characters and add more depth to a specific story arc.

So while he still maintains that cocky arrogance I originally intended, Flintathriël is now burdened with a few more obstacles and responsibilities (as well as a kick ass love interest), making the transition from comic relief to tortured hero.

5/5 Stars!

Paranormal Romance at its BEST!

Reyna Daniels returns unannounced to her home in Minnesota. Having left almost eight years ago with only brief visits since, the event planner allows her family to believe she’s only in town long enough to help her boss coordinate a major social event.

But Reyna Daniels has a secret she’s not ready to divulge. However, she begins to realize there’s more going on with her brother, Madison ‘Maddy’ Daniels, and his ‘work crew’ than meets the eye and knows she’s not the only one with secrets.

From the beginning when a ‘trespasser’ is spotted on the property, Reyna’s nerves are on edge. Or is it because of six and a half feet of mighty, mouth watering manliness? To be fair, the whole ‘work crew’ is obscenely handsome, worthy of any magazine cover. But, it’s when Corbyn Bruschard is near, Reyna can’t think, can barely speak, and is always on the defensive.

And she’s at a total loss as to why.

Corbyn knows why… because he is Ùlfrinn and Reyna is his mate. He scents her the second he enters Maddy’s house.

Unlike the usual paranormal romance, the challenge isn’t so much convincing Reyna she is Corbyn’s mate… but making her accept her own Ùlfrinn heritage.

Not an easy feat when Reyna and Maddy’s parents convinced them long ago that hiding who they are kept them safe from the devastation of the past and those who lurk in the shadows of the present. Reyna buried her heritage deep and lived as a human. Can she change? Does she want to?

And that’s just the first 15% of the story!

Tightly written and deftly paced, author A.C. Melody straps us into a rollercoaster and holds us hostage, but it’s such a fun ride with no lag time.

Reyna Daniels is an independent woman. She left Pine Grove for college in Chicago, determined to live in peace on her own. Me thinks she might have been a bit hasty seeing as how her parents left town right behind her, RVing around the country. Still, I like Reyna. She’s practical and logical. She has a strong spirit, and she doesn’t take herself too seriously.

Corbyn Bruschard is 100% Alpha, make no mistake. But he’s not the harsh, iron-fisted Alpha–although I wouldn’t be the one to push his buttons—he’s the type who leads by example and compassion. He’s the type who thinks nothing of playing superhero with a three-year-old. He’s also the type who will rain devastation down on you if you mess with his pack… or his mate.

I like these two together, their chemistry has depth. When they let their guards down, it’s pure joy and romance. When they banter, it’s hilarious… okay, at least to me. The intimate scenes between them are graphic, but not gratuitous. The accompanying dialogue allows you inside their thoughts… and hearts.

I was not happy with Reyna Daniels for about five minutes. Her inner thoughts of ‘what if?’ and ‘probably not’ were becoming exhausting [to me]. She compares the burgeoning relationship with Corbyn to her past relationships—all three of them—attempting to predict the outcome of what she and Corbyn have. Reyna knows what she wants but is afraid the past will repeat itself.

But it can’t. Because she has never been as open (or open at all) with any man the way she has with Corbyn. Not knowing about Reyna’s prior relationships, I MUST give her the benefit of the doubt not only because I’ve trusted her this far, but because we all ‘are the sum of our experiences.’ Reyna’s thoughts didn’t take her out of character… just stalled her, not allowing her to move forward. When Reyna mentally smacked herself in the head and was honest with herself, we were once again BFFs.

Speaking of BFFs, this story has an amazing ensemble cast of memorable characters, but none more so than Serena Daniels, Reyna’s childhood best friend and sister-in-law. Regardless of the situation, Serena, petite though she may be, is large and in charge. Serena has no problem keeping a salacious bunch of male models, er, I mean pack members in line, mothering a three-year-old, having Reyna’s back, and being there for Maddy, the love of her life.

All of this is delivered on a tapestry of detailed Norse Mythology (NOT the Marvel Comics kind) that keeps you anchored in your seat and reading.

Wolf shifters, evil interlopers, secret government agencies, mythological beings, a Lamborghini and a Draumurhalda. Get ready for this read and 1-click!

Enjoy!

EXCERPT The Suspenseful Collection:

(When he ran his hands up my thigh, I…)

“Sarah.”

My name escapes him, and it sounds the exact same as it once had. After a long heartfelt hug, he holds me back at arm’s length to take a look at me.

“Wow, my love. You look as stunning as ever.”

The sound of his pet name for me pulls at a tear to the corner of my eye, and my lungs threaten to stop pulling air.

“Thank you.” I smile, completely beside myself. “As do you, babe.”

After a full sweep over of his aged but still very attractive and wanting gaze, he notices. Joshua has recognized his mother’s necklace and all formalities are out the window. His mouth opens slightly in shock and his eyes pull together at the middle.

“Oh my God, Sarah, is that?”  He pauses.

I watch his eyes fill up with moisture, and I draw in a deep breath and nod.

“You kept it. All these years, you still have it?”

Again I can only manage a nod. The shock in his face is honest and genuine. We have so much to catch up on, and all I want to do is pull him in and tell him how I’ve never forgotten. His eyes are the same and the energy of his body so close to mine makes my chest scream out. If only I could turn back time…. If only, I think.

Joshua pulls my chair from around the table, so that it’s right next to his. We sit side by side, close to the window, and the waiter fills our glasses with the most perfect red wine. Softly, his hands rest on my exposed knees, his fingers wrapping around to the sensitive skin behind them. For a moment it feels as if my spirit lifts, my heart free.

I close my eyes and allow myself to be emotionally transported to a different place in time. I breathe in his scent. The hands on my legs no longer feel rough and calloused with aged. They’re young, strong, and smooth. I remember the heat of his body against mine, young and pulsating. When his hands ran up my thighs I instantly reminisce the feelings of our first night together. The night that I gave myself to this man. I gave him every part of me. Heart body and soul I gave it all. Joshua, my soldier. The man who left, but  I’ve carried inside myself for over thirty years.

It was a beautiful summer day in 1961.

Excerpt

“Hello, Natalia.”

The sharp pain in her chest couldn’t have been any worse if someone had cracked open her ribcage, reached inside, and torn out her heart.

“Leave me alone, Cash,” she croaked to the man she’d adored since she was fifteen.

“I can’t do that.”

She tightened her grip on the door handle, certain if she let go she’d crumple to the floor. “Don’t you think I’ve been hurt enough?” she whispered.

Cash bowed his head, and his shoulders drooped. “I don’t want to cause you any more pain.”

“Then go away.” She turned her back on him and opened the door.

“Please, Natalia. Can we go inside and talk?”

She rested her forehead against the doorframe. “No,” she said in a wavering voice. Tears pricked behind her eyes. She dug her fingernails into her palm as she swallowed past an uncomfortable lump in her throat.

“I can explain,” he said, his hand lightly touching her arm.

She spun out of his reach but kept her back to him. “I said no.” Her chin trembled, and she clenched her jaw to stop the involuntary movement. “I’m not interested in anything you have to say.”

“I know I’ve fucked up. Please, let me inside. I’ll tell you everything. About Gracie, about my mother and father. Everything. It’s what I should have done already.”

“Cash, please.” She faced him then, her voice cracking as the tears she’d desperately tried to hold back spilled down her cheeks. “Why are you doing this?”

“Oh, baby,” he said, reaching for her again.

She staggered backwards and stumbled over the step. Her ankle twisted as she tried to save herself. Cash shot out an arm and pulled her against his chest. This time, she didn’t have the energy to resist. She slumped against him as he dug around in his pocket.

He produced a crumpled tissue and wiped away her tears. “You’re freezing. Let’s go inside and get you warmed up.”

Before she could protest, he ushered her through the door and into the tiny hallway. He walked straight ahead into the kitchen like he owned the damned place and then flicked the kettle on.

“Go and get a shower. I’ll have the tea made by the time you get out.”

She wanted to tell him no, that she could make her own bloody tea, but the words wouldn’t come. She trudged into the bathroom and locked the door. She wouldn’t put it past Cash to follow her, and she craved control even as she sensed it slipping out of reach.

She’d thought Brighton would be a refuge, a place to heal, but he’d found her so easily. Once she’d showered and dressed in clean clothes, she would be able to deal with Cash. She would listen to what he had to say and then politely ask him to leave.

And then she was going home to London.

Tracie Delaney

Interview with the Author

Tracie, can you tell us what’s your favorite genre to read?

I have pretty varied tastes, although if I had to pick a top 2 (sorry, picking 1 is impossible), I would say romance and thrillers – quite different genres!

Speaking of different genres, do you venture into other genres other than your preferred?

Yes, I read across most genres, although I’m not a huge fan of sci-fi and fantasy, both of which I love in movies but not so much in books

What are you reading now?

James Patterson’s 14th Deadly Sin (part of the Women’s Murder Club Series). I’m a bit behind – I think it’s up to 16 now – but I love Lindsay Boxer, the protagonist. She’s just the type of heroine I like to read about

When your reading do you have a favorite beverage to read with?

Coffee – and lots of it

I think  lots of coffee is a must.

Let’s get down to the writing. Are you self-published or traditional?

I’m an indie writer. I’m not a big fan of the term self-published. I think, as a term, it has had its day.

Good point. How long have you been a writer?

I’ve always had a love affair with books, from a very young age. When I was in my early twenties, I wrote about fifty thousand words of a novel (and in those days I did it longhand), but then never finished it. I became immersed with self doubt. Why would anyone want to read anything I wrote?

After that, life kind of got in the way. I had a career to build and a mortgage to pay. Then about six years ago, these characters sprang into my head from nowhere. Literally, one day my mind was free and clear; the next, I could not shut them up. They demanded their story be written.

The next day I sat down and did as I was told. When I typed ‘The End’ on that first novel, little did I know it was only the beginning. If I compare my achievement to mountain climbing, I was still at the hotel in Nepal, and base camp, let alone The Summit, was a long way off.

Recognising I needed practice, I wrote a second book. And then I had a piece of good fortune. I began to follow a site called The Editors Blog. It had the most amazing advice for writers, all given freely and generously. I sent the owner of the site, Beth Hill a sample of my work. Her feedback, although direct, was exactly what I needed. She told me what I already knew deep down. I was far from the finished article.

That contact started an almost four year journey with Beth. She became my mentor. I owe everything to that amazing lady who taught me everything I know about creative writing. I’m still learning, every day, but I will never forget that my journey started with her.

I have a similar relationship with a lady I met online and think of her as my mentor as well. She’s not afraid to give me a swift kick when needed.

How long did it take you to write your first book?

Six months

That’s an amazing pace. Did you publish it?

Goodness me no! It was completely unpublishable in its original form, although now, six years later, I am rewriting it, changing quite a lot (okay, changing everything!) It’s a book with great characters, a great storyline, but is very badly written. So maybe, in the near future, it will be published.

I can’t wait to read it.

What’s your favorite genre to write?

Romance and Romantic Suspense

Those are two of my favorites. I’m a sucker for a romance.

Do you have any advice for new authors?

Yes – write. Just sit down every day and get some words on the page/computer. Don’t worry about whether they are bad, good or indifferent words. Worry about all the other things that comes with being a writer later. Writing the book is THE number one thing to focus on.

Great advice. You can’t edit what you haven’t written, that’s for sure.

Where do you get the most writing done?

My study. Originally it was a garage which I had converted. My husband is still mourning the loss of his garage

I can sympathize. We inherited a poorly constructed garage and my husband takes spells where he sinks all his time into fixing it but I personally believe it’s beyond help. He just want let it die.

Tracie’s Latest Project

The Winning Ace series has been a real labour of love. Cash Gallagher, the protagonist, came to me some years ago, and I’ve loved spending all these years with his voice in my head. He’s a great guy, but hugely complex and very private, hence his conflict with Tally!

I’m a huge tennis fan, so when I found out Cash was a top tennis player, that was all the inspiration I needed.

The series started out as a three book trilogy, but has recently been expanded to a fourth book which will focus on Rupe Fox-Whittingham who is Cash’s best friend. I received several requests to write Rupe’s story, and I felt he deserved to step out from Cash’s shadow.

The original book took an age to write. Because I was still quite new, I kept fiddling with it and couldn’t quite let go and move on. The next two (Losing Game and Grand Slam) which much quicker to write. Grand Slam is currently with my editor and will be released in October. Mismatch, the final novel will be released in December.

Author Bio

Tracie Delaney is the author of the Winning Ace series. She loves nothing more than immersing herself in a good romance, although she sometimes, rather cheekily, makes her characters wait for their HEA.

When she isn’t writing or sitting around with her head stuck in a book, she can often be found watching The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones or any tennis match involving Roger Federer. Her greatest fear is running out of coffee.

Tracie studied accountancy, gaining her qualification in 2001. Her maths teacher would no doubt be stunned by this revelation considering Tracie could barely add two plus two at high school.

Tracie lives in the North West of England with her amazingly supportive husband. They both share a love of dogs, travel and wine.

The Suspenseful Collection Volume One: Eight Suspenseful Short Stories Across Multiple Genres

By Kim Knight & Didi Oviatt

If you haven’t had a chance to check out Two Suspense Authors Telling Tales this is your chance to own your very own copy of the awesome tales these two created from their readers votes.

~~~***My Review***~~~
If you want to go on a wild ride including Steamy Historical Crime Fiction, Psychological Fiction, Crime Fiction, Contemporary Romance, Suspense, Fantasy, Suspenseful Crime Fiction, to Contemporary Fiction then this is the book for you. It’s full of eight short stories primed to take you on an unforgettable journey.
I’ll only share two of the eight with you in this review.
Steamy Historical Crime Fiction: It was The First Time I Killed A Man.
This is the first story in the set and it is full of suspense and drama. I hung on every word. I’d love to see other short stories that include the bad girl Lisa and her past unthinkable deeds.
Lisa is New York’s first serial killer and she is a horribly intriguing character with her own brand of crazy.
Tiffany has been sent to visit Lisa in prison to get the scoop on her life before Lisa is sent to death for her crimes.
I think Lisa is my favorite character even though she is a mad women. Her victims are my least favorite for their behavior.
I enjoyed reading this story my only complaint is that it’s too short. I want more.
Fantasy: The Ones Who Live At The Bottom Of The Ocean, Come To The Surface.
This story is another well written short that I would love to see extended into a longer version maybe even a novella. I’m so intrigued and drawn into it.
We follow Zoe as she learns what her real heritage is. Her dragon grandmother has abandoned her mother but her mother never abandoned her duty to her peoples past.
The dragon grandmother was my least favorite character with her my way only attitude. But she does run the town. Zoe and her mother tie for my favorite characters in this one.
Again I thought the writing was great and my only complaint is there wasn’t enough of it.
~~~***Overall impressions***~~~

This book is filled with twists and turns sure to keep most readers on their toes. Surprises come from left field that add drama and intensity. For a blog experiment, I’m blown away.

~~~***BLURB***~~~
A suspenseful novel with a twist. Eight short stories, by two suspense authors, from diverse backgrounds. From opposite sides of the Atlantic these stories have been created. One author started the tale and the other ended it. No discussion, no pre-planning, yet their stories are seamless. With just creativity and the use of writing prompts, to craft one tale, with two different writers. This anthology of suspenseful, fast paced and engaging tales covers multiple genres. From heartfelt romance, crime, fantasy, and steamy historical fiction. There is a story for everyone!
Steamy Historical Crime Fiction: It was The First Time I Killed A Man.
It’s 1972 and New York’s first female serial killer Lisa Vanacilli is in the hot seat again, ten years after her conviction of murder to the first degree and innocent plea. The ruthless but sexy reporter Tiffany Low cracks Lisa for a confession… at a price. Lisa is strong, courageous and says it how it is. This story has been extended due to reader’s demand. And is only for adult readers.
Psychological Fiction: Every Time I Hear That Voice From The Basement.
George appears to be harmless. The local neighbourhood geek on the outside, married to Jolene. In reality, he’s a very disturbed man. His path crosses with Dana, the local check out girl. This is a psychological suspense story with a twist.
Crime Fiction: The Entrance To The Tunnel Is His Only Way Out.
Juan is a wanted man, and an ex-gang member on the run from Atlanta to Mexico. With a hundred grand in cash stolen from his ex-boss, he meets an unlikely fate in Mexico. A fast-paced crime fiction story.
Contemporary Romance: When His Hands Run Up My Thighs I…
Love has no time limit, age limit or use by date. Sarah now in her fifties is reunited with her long-lost love Joshua. They last had contact in 1961. In the present day, thanks to the advancement of technology their paths cross. A heart-warming and modern tale, about long distance love, that will leave you warm inside.
Suspense: We Only Said Goodbye With Words, I Died A Hundred Times:
In 1963 Russian Femme Fatale Mila Petrov is London’s top Madam. Her entertainment house is booming, she has a team of London’s strongest women behind her. Unfinished business from her past creeps up and haunts her. It’s nothing she can’t handle. A suspenseful historical tale, with a strong Femme Fatale.
Fantasy: The Ones Who Live At The Bottom Of The Ocean, Come To The Surface.
A beautiful coming of age story, featuring sixteen year old Zoe and her mother May-Li. Myth becomes reality, as Zoe finds out who and what she really is. Her mixed descent reveals more than what meets the eye. This fantasy story is set against the backdrop of a Greek island and Hong Kong, China.
Suspenseful Crime Fiction: Guilty As Charged, In Self-Defence
California’s sassy, tough, and likeable defence lawyer Catherine has taken on a case so high profile, if she wins she’ll become a partner of Martin Law Firm. Defending forty six year old Mrs. Chevelle. An ex Las Vegas show girl, now a Hollywood wife, on trial for the murder of her high-profile husband. She claims she’s innocent. Readers are taken on a fast -paced journey on a mission to seek the truth.
Contemporary Fiction: It’s A Man’s Man’s World:
A beautiful modern tale showing the love and appreciation of a woman. James Brown said it right when he said, “it’s a man’s man’s world, but it would mean nothing without a woman or a girl.”
~~~***EXCERPT The Suspenseful Collection***~~~

Kim is thirty four (born in 1983), and from London in the UK. She’s a mother to a beautiful toddler and a proud author of seven romance and thriller books. Kim started her journey as a traditionally published author after she scored a publishing contract with a USA based publisher. She was over the moon! However, it became clear to Kim that things were not as she expected. Therefore, she set out on her own journey, she dived head first into the world of self-publishing and republished two of her fictional stories, and became a proud self-published author also. Something great was unleashed, she’ll never look back in regret.

As a reader she’s head over heels in love with romance, historical fiction, crime fiction, African- American, suspense and thriller genre books. At present Kim is writing a romantic thriller novel, and brainstorming steamy romance novella ideas. As a writer, Kim enjoys creating stories with a diverse and multi-cultural line up, within the romance, romantic suspense, general thriller and crime genres. When she’s not reading, or writing stories of her own her other passions include practising her French, fashion, drawing, make-up artistry, spending time at her sewing machine dressmaking, watching make up and beauty tutorials on YouTube, letter writing and being a mum.

Haven Is Available To Pre-order!

I know a few of my eagle-eyed readers have spotted this already, but I’m delighted to be able to officially announce that HAVEN is now available for pre-order!

The first book in my brand new spin-off series with Piatkus Books, HAVEN is due for release on 2nd November this year – but you can order your paperbacks and eBooks now!

Every few days, the handsome stranger comes into the café in Lowtown for an hour at a time. Mostly he keeps himself to himself – one drink and he leaves. Sometimes people meet with him but about what remains elusive, the edge of mystery and danger adding to his allure.

Not that Ember is allowed to think about him. She’s finally on the cusp of gaining her citizenship and escaping Lowtown for good, so she can’t be seen to be involved with a vampire – evidence of one single bite would be the end of her prospects. But when those prospects are rocked by her links to the district’s dark underbelly, the stranger she must avoid could be her absolution – and she could be his . . .

A spin-off from the bestselling Blackthorn series by Lindsay J. Pryor, set in Lowtown, the neighbouring district to Blackthorn. The product of a brutal class system, the dark, enticing world of Lowtown will grip you and never let you go.

*

What reviewers are saying:

I absolutely adore the world she’s put into place here. Everything is so well formed with its own history and culture that it really feels like I’m living in Blackthorn… (Marked by Books)

This is a paranormal universe like none you have encountered before. (Keeper Bookshelf)

I don’t think I have read such a finely executed dark PNR world before… The world-building is spectacular. (Gaga Over Books)

Lindsay Pryor has crafted a world that’s intricate, gritty and genuinely fascinating… (Big Little Sister Blog)

This concept is creative and different from other paranormal books I’ve read lately. (My Paranormal Book Review)

I cannot say how much I love this author. She is creating a world which sucks you in, which makes you want to know more about Blackthorn and its inhabitants. (I Heart Books)

Not only are Pryor’s characters and fathomlessly dark love stories fabulous, but her continual world building of Blackthorn blows me away. (Gravetells)

Lindsay is a wonderful writer. She’s crafted one heck of a world… (Vice President of Creative Affairs for Relativity Media Film Studios, California)…

Cover Reveal! Family Matters, by Felicia Denise

Book: Family Matters

Series: In the Best Interest of the Child, Book 2

Author: Felicia Denise

Genre: Women’s Fiction

Release Date: July/August 2017

Synopsis:

Olivia Chandler’s journey to wholeness continues as she enters counseling. Her therapy will not be easy, and may not be successful unless Olivia can forgive her mother. But is Sarina Chandler the only one in need of Olivia’s forgiveness?

A Halloween party brings together a surprising group of people, and Bruce introduces Olivia to his adult children. Another Bellamy has a second chance at love – if he can put his old-fashioned ways aside.

The death of someone close to Olivia has her re-thinking the value of emotional connections. She withdraws from everyone, falling back into her old habit of burying herself in work. A surprise confrontation pushes Olivia to her limits, and puts her heart on the line.

Her continued avoidance of confronting Sarina Chandler pulls at the seams of Olivia’s new-found love with Bruce Bellamy. Olivia must make a decision. Save them… or surrender to her emotional demons.

Excerpt:

“Olivia Chandler? I’m Sandra Riley, Sarina’s case manager.”

The tall woman grasped Olivia’s hand into both of her own, shaking briskly. “We’re so glad you’re here today. This is a big step forward for your mother.”

“Nice to meet you, Sandra, and honestly, it’s a big step for me too.”

“Oh, I’m sure, Olivia. Any questions for me before you visit with Sarina?”

Visit with Sarina. She made it sound so cute and homey, Olivia thought.

“Does she know I planned to be here today?”

“Yes, she does. When Sarina asked about you a few weeks ago, she said she also knew you’d have little or no reason to want to see her, but she’d always hoped you come someday.”

Olivia stared at the woman blankly, not knowing how to respond to the comment.

“I’m sure this is confusing, Olivia, and now isn’t the time for me to explain all that Sarina has gone through, but please know she is fully cognizant of her aging, of you, her late husband”, Sandra paused only for a second, “she even remembers the accident. It’s everything between the accident and a few months ago that’s fuzzy for her. It’s as though a switch was flipped off in her brain that was recently turned back on.”

Olivia frowned but didn’t ask the question on the tip of her tongue.

“May I see her now?”

“Of course! Follow me.”

The case manager’s long legs covered the distance across the sitting area in no time at all, with Olivia almost scurrying to keep up with her. Margot and Randie were always teasing Olivia about her brisk walking pace, but she had nothing on Sandra Riley! Olivia would guess Sandra to be at least six feet tall… and light on her feet.

Reaching an unmarked door in the far corner, Sandra held it open for Olivia, who walked through and found herself standing in yet another sitting room, only this one resembled the average family room. Large, overstuffed chairs, throw rugs and even a flat screen television graced the area.

“Welcome to Honey Ridge East, Olivia.”

“Honey Ridge East? I don’t understand.”

Sandra pointed to a bulletin board on the wall near the door they’d just come through.

“The residents here are grouped by floor, the severity of mental disorder, and the amount of care and supervision needed. The healthiest, most independent residents reside here in Honey Ridge.”

“My mother is here…in this section?”

She nodded.

Olivia tried to digest the information. Her mother was healthy? Required little or no supervision? Trying to reconcile this new Sarina with the bedridden, incoherent woman she last saw five years ago was difficult for Olivia.

“How long has she lived here?”

Sandra pursed her lips, thinking. Then she nodded.

“I’m pretty sure Sarina was here for the group’s Valentine’s Day dinner dance, so that makes it eight months.” Sandra tried not to laugh at the horrified expression on Olivia’s face.

“Don’t be shocked. We also have Easter Egg hunts and 4th of July barbecues. Most of the residents have signed up for hayrides next week for Halloween, and…” she leaned in towards Olivia, “I heard Santa will visit on Christmas Eve.”

Shaking her head, Olivia was incredulous.

“What kind of mental hospital is this? I mean, um…I thought…”

The case manager guided Olivia past the sitting area while answering.

“River Ridge Meadows is a private care, private pay, voluntary commitment facility. We’re fully licensed by the state and the federal government. Insurance isn’t accepted here, and no resident is here against their will. We currently have one hundred and sixty-one residents ranging in age from seven to eighty-six. Most are from throughout the state, but there are a few from other parts of the country, and even four from Europe. River Ridge has two permanent, board certified psychiatrists, two permanent, board certified medical doctors, six psychologists, and a nursing staff…

5 Tips for Attending a Book Signing

This week, I was able to drive over to Frisco, Texas, to listen to Sarah Dessen talk about her latest book, which I reviewed HERE. I hadn’t ever been to a book signing before, so I really had no idea what to expect. I wasn’t sure how early to show up or if I could bring a book from home for her to sign. How long would it last? (This one was about an hour, from when she started talking to the point where my book had been signed.)

After attending the event, I’ve made a list of a few tips for anyone going to a book signing for the first time…
